Harmony is putting colors next to each other that go well together. Harmony of color is what looks normal to the viewer. The following combinations produce a good color balance:
- Complementary colors at the same value and intensity for each hue in a design
- Analogous values of the same hue in the composition
- Opposite values for each hue in the composition
- Opposite intensities for each hue in the composition
Complementary colors placed adjacent to each other offer the highest level of contrast. Choosing from tints or shades within the hue family reduces the overall contrast of the composition. Placing small areas of light color on a dark background, or a small area of dark on a light background will create an accent.
Colors also change according to the distance we are from them. Faraway hills and objects are bluish or cooler in color. Very bright hues seem bright in the distance but they are invariably lighter and hazier the farther away they are.
