Term: Botanical Art

Botanical artists, trained in both botany and art, close the connection between science and art. Traditional media and techniques are used within the discipline of botanical illustration. The elements of art are used: line, shape (positive and negative), form, value, space and color and/or texture. They also use design principles such as, balance, movement, emphasis, rhythm, pattern, contrast and unity. Basically, elements are the bricks and principles are the way the bricks are organized to produce a final composition. (From Penstemons to Pines, Denver Botanic Gardens)
