Term: Scumble

A scumble is a semi-opaque color applied thinly over a darker color to make it softer or duller. It is a technique where dry paint is applied loosely to a dry surface creating areas of thin and broken color allowing previous layers to show through. Like glazing, scumbling is transparent, which is optically mixed with the color under it to produce a third color. Scumbling is used mostly in oil and acrylic painting.
