Term: Direct and Indirect Painting

Direct painting is a method of painting in which the painter endeavors to mix a color of the correct hue, value, and intensity and apply it directly to the canvas, so a single stroke of opaque color is as close to the final color as possible.

Indirect painting is where the color seen by the viewer is not held within a single stroke of paint, but is built up through a series of transparent glazes, usually over a detailed monochromatic underpainting.
