Term: Form Shadow

A form shadow is the portion of an object that does not receive direct light because another portion of the same object obstructs that light. For example, half of the moon is always in shadow because sunlight cannot reach the side facing away from the sun. A form shadow has a softer or less defined edge than a cast shadow. Form shadows are essential for making a subject appear three dimensional rather than flat.
