Term: Limited Palette

An artist that deliberately restricts the number of hues in a painting is said to be using a limited or restricted palette. In this sense the term has two meanings. On the one hand, an artist can limit the number of colors by employing a color scheme. An artist can also limit colors by reducing the number of tube colors placed on the palette.

A limited palette typically has six or less colors, not counting white. With fewer hues and chroma to choose from, the artist can more easily create colors that are unified and harmonious. A good guideline is that the more complicated or dynamic a subject, the fewer colors should be used. Conversely, if a painting has few components then a less limited palette will add variety.
