Term: Monochrome

A picture, especially a painting, created using different values and intensities of a single color, or that appears to have limited hues. Monochrome images in neutral colors are often called grayscale or black-and-white images. There are many techniques that involve monochromatic elements. For example, a grisaille is an underpainting done in shades of gray. Verdaccio describes a monochrome color that is also used in underpainting. Artists known for their monochrome paintings include Yves Klein (who used a special blue he created), Ed Reinhardt (who used black), and John Virtue (who used white acrylic paint and black ink).
