Term: Gradation

In art, gradation is a principle of design that describes a slow transition between opposites. The transition can be from light to dark, from one hue to another, or even from one kind of shape to another. Gradation can be used to add interest in a composition. For instance, gradation of size and direction produces linear perspective, while gradation of color from warm to cool produces aerial perspective.
