Term: Quoting the Painting

The phrase "quoting the painting" describes when artists use elements of another artist's image in their own work. This is not the same as mimicking the entire work but rather hinting or suggesting that the new work has been influenced by a particular painting. For example, a new painting might be considered Turner'esk if it is filled with airy atmospheric colors. It might "quote the painting" if it has a blue-yellow sky similar to what we see in Turner's "A Harbour with a Town and Fortress Canal".
