In general a solvent is a "substance that is capable of dissolving another substance." In painting, the term is used for diluents that adjust the curing properties and viscosity of paints while they are in liquid form. Painting solvents (like water, turpentine, or mineral spirits) are transient in nature and dissipate (that is, evaporate or disintegrate) rather than become a permanent part of the cured paint. Solvents are also used to dissolve resins, make
mediums, and clean brushes.
