A nine-step scale used to describe how
values change between black and white. The scale was developed by Denman Ross in 1907 and has since been adopted as a standard for describing value gradations. The individual increments are easy to remember and apply. In addition, the scale can be applied using three value levels (that is, light, midvalue and dark), five levels (that is, white, light, midvalue, dark, black) or all nine levels.
