Term: Inpainting

Inpainting is where an artist reworks an area within a painting that was previously completed. The term is used most frequently when referring to the reconstruction or restoration of deteriorated images. In the case of a valuable painting, inpainting would only be done by a skilled restoration artist.

Inpainting is easier to do with oils or acrylics. Inpainting with watercolors is not done very often as it is very difficult to blend the reworked areas so that they do not detract from the rest of the painting.
