Term: Interpretation

"...interpretation involves translating the subject into the artist's own personal and subjective style. In general terms, three criteria form the basis of interpretation: exaggerating certain features of the subject, reducing them, or omitting them completely... Artists should express their personal impression by emphasizing those features they consider essential, reducing secondary ones and suppressing accessory ones. What is essential for one artist may be superflous for another."
