John Singer Sargent had the following counsel for his student, Miss Julie Helen Heyneman. He insisted that she not draw from models and friends while still working to improve her knowledge skills as an artist.
"If you paint your friends, they and you are chiefly concerned about the likeness. You can't discard a canvas when you please and begin anew — you can't go on indefinitely till you have solved a problem."
It is probably best to wait and paint your closest friends and family after you have mastered the ability to reproduce a likeness.
