Quote: Every Painting Must Have An Underlying Abstract Idea

"Every painting must have an underlying abstract idea, as well as its more obvious subject - in effect, it must have two subjects: the person or still life or view that you're looking at and the painterly concept that you have decided will best express your reaction to that person or that still life or that view. Both these subjects are related, and the painter's ideal is to unite them, to make form and content one."
