"In many ways, a painting is a synthesis of opposites: light and shadow, warm and cool, sharp and soft, coarse and fine. These polarities, when integrated into the picture, create vibrancy and dynamism. If everything in a painting is warm, the picture will have a hothouse look. If everything is coarsely painted, the eye is given nothing to settle on. If everything is finely painted, too much information will confuse the viewer. Putting in the opposite of each of its qualities will open the picture up and expand its range."
"I am not saying, of course, that every quality in a picture should be evenly matched with its opposite... The distribution of opposites doesn't have to be even, just evident."
