Term: Gamut

A color gamut defines a range of colors that are a subset of the colors that are visible to the human eye. In color reproduction, including computer graphics and photography, a gamut refers to the colors that can be accurately reproduced. When certain colors cannot be represented, those colors are said to be out of gamut.

In painting, the color gamut is defined by the set of paints used by the artists. When all primary colors are available, the gamut has a wide range and is rarely considered. On the other hand, when using a limited palette a gamut map helps the artist understand which colors are possible and which are not. The gamut plays an important part in determining the emotion, mood and temperature of the final painting.
