Term: Retouch Varnish

A clear liquid varnish that dries to a glossy film giving temporary protection to oil paints that are dry to the touch. Damar retouch varnish is a permanent varnish that has been thinned so that oxygen can penetrate the surface allowing the paint to continue drying. Since retouch varnish does not form a complete layer, paint added over the varnish is able to penetrate through the varnish and bond to the paint underneath.

Retouch varnish is used to bring the appearance of dry oil paint back to the gloss, color, and value of freshly applied paint so the artist can accurately match the color and value of work previously done. Retouch varnish can be painted over and retouch varnished again many times. When the paint is thoroughly dry, a final varnish should be applied.
