Term: Velatura

Velatura is an Italian term that translates roughly as veil or fog. The term is used in art to describe a layer of opaque paint spread thinly so that it does not completely obscure the color underneath. It is very similar to a glaze but employs opaque rather than transparent paint. A velatura was applied by early Italian painters using their hand or finger rather than a brush.
