Quote: A Few Colors May Shout But Some Should Whisper

"A painting made entirely of high intensity colors would be overwhelming. It’s the painterly equivalent of a shouting match. A few colors in a painting may shout, but some should also whisper. I like to think of subdued colors as whispers. Grays are the most common examples of subdued colors, but just because they are subdued doesn't mean they are boring."
