A white, inert
pigment of low opacity used to increase the bulk of
paint. It is most often used in cheaper paints as a substitute for more expensive color pigments. As a result, they do not hide as well and have impact the overall characteristics and performance of a paint (including hiding, durability, scrubbability and color retention). Common extenders are calcium carbonate, silica, diatomaceous earth, talc, and clay.
