Term: Foxing

Brownish-yellow patches of discoloration that appear on vintage paper including watercolors, prints and books. Although the causes of foxing are not well understood, it is believed to be caused by molds that grow on the iron salts left on the paper from production. High humidity may also contribute to foxing. Foxing can be treated but it is unlikely to be removed entirely. Although unsightly, foxing does not affect the actual integrity of the paper.
