Term: Sinopia

An Italian word for the red to reddish-brown earth pigment found in Turkey. It is composed of iron oxides that come from a clay or quartz called sinople. The color was used as early as the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in the underdrawing of fresco paintings. Today the term is used to refer to any drawing or underpainting done in a reddish color.
