Term: Terminator

The dividing line between the illuminated and unilluminated parts of a form. This terminator line occurs at the point beyond which light cannot reach the form, or where the surface is tangent to the direction of the light. The terminator defines where the form shadow begins. A form shadow can occur on an object even where no physical edge exists, as is the case with spheres and other objects with curved surfaces.
