Blending is a painting technique where two or more colors are placed in close proximity to each other and their edges are mixed to form a gradual transition. The size and consistency of the transition area varies depending on what is being depicted. The blended area can be narrow and abrupt or broad and gentle to suit the subject.
Blending can be done directly on the canvas if the colors are still wet. New paint can be dry brushed over an existing color if the paint has dried. Blends can also be made by glazing colors one over the other with varying degrees of opaqueness.
