"If you observe your subject as a whole, you will find that all the parts do not attract the attention equally. Certain things will strike one more than others. Parts of certain edges will be sharper, while others will be more lost. This quality of accent is analogous to phrasing in the singing of a song. If a song is sung correctly as written, with an equal attention to each note, it is a dull, lifeless affair. It is sung in phrases, with a stress on certain parts, in very much the same way that in speaking one stresses certain words and runs over others."
