Term: Blooming

Blooming (or blushing) is a superficial cloudy area in the varnish that protects a painting. This condition is caused by moisture getting into the film of varnish while it is still wet. To remove the bloom from varnish, take 1/3 turpentine, 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 paint thinner, mix them thoroughly and moisten a lint-free cloth with the mixture. Gently rub the surface of the varnish until the bloom disappears.
