Term: Stump

A stump is a densely rolled paper tool used for blending pastel, charcoal, pencil, and other drawing media. A blending stump is similar to a tortillon but is longer, more tightly wrapped, and pointed at both ends. Stumps are solid rather than hollow and come in a variety of lengths and diameters. Stumps can be used to blend large areas or to apply the medium directly to the paper for softer effects. Stumps are cleaned by rubbing the dirty end on a rough surface, like sandpaper.
