A tortillon (or tortillion) is a cylindrical drawing tool that is made of paper that has been wound into a spiral on at least one end. It is used by artists to smudge or blend marks made with charcoal, conté crayon, pencil or other drawing media. Tortillons can be purchased or they can be easily made using scrap paper. The softness or hardness of the tortillion is controlled by the type of paper used. To clean a tortillon, the used outer layer of paper must be removed by scraping or rubbing the end on an abrasive surface (such as, sandpaper, emery board, or hard eraser).
