Term: Tonal Painting

Young Girl Wearing a White Muslin Blouse [detail]
Tonal painting is a method that employs a mass approach to painting by using light and dark values (chiaroscuro) to create form without the use of lines. Forms and shapes emerge naturally as tonal contrasts are developed and refined. Tonal painters include Titian, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Corot, Chardin and John Singer Sargent.
