Term: Value Study

In art, a study is a drawing or painting done in preparation for a finished piece. Studies may be thought of as visual notes made by the artist, or as practice pieces. A value study is a study that focuses specifically on the relationships between light and dark in a composition (or value). Value studies are typically done in monochrome to avoid the complexities associated with working in full color.
