Term: Cobalt

A metal resembling nickel, from which a range of pigments is made. For example, cobalt blue is a cool blue made from cobalt salts of alumina. Cobalt blue is extremely stable but relatively expensive to produce. Vincent van Gogh declared to his brother, "Cobalt [blue] is a divine colour and there is nothing so beautiful for putting atmosphere around things..."
